Our Intelligent Process
Your lawn is in a dormant state until the ground temperature warms up to 50-60 degrees. Fertilizer (our first visit) will provide the nutrients needed to promote the growth of roots and shoots of a grass plant. Fertilizer will also help cure winter injuries from snow molds and winter desiccation. By adding iron to your lawn, you can achieve a faster green up that will mask unsightly winter injury. Our fertilizer contains a sulfur coated urea to ensure a slow release of the appropriate amount of nitrogen to the grass plant. This release will be over a 6-8 week period.
Soil temperatures will increase in April and May to about 55-65 degrees. At this time crabgrass will start to germinate. A good environmental indicator that we have reached this timeframe is the blooming of the forsythia bush (yellow flowers), which are found throughout New England. It’s time for your second visit. I moved this from under visit one to visit two. Our liquid application (visit two) of essential nutrients, crabgrass controls, weed knockdown and wetting agents is the most important visit.
When soil temperatures increase, the process of crabgrass germination is underway. We combat this with a blanket application of Dimension to prevent 95% of crabgrass infestations that will occur in summer months. Breakthrough of the other 5% may occur depending on the severity of the crabgrass infestation.
Our weed knock down is used to eliminate those pesky broadleaf weeds that may have popped up due to the temperatures increasing. Weeds have to be present in order to be treated and can take up to two weeks to die off. If you experience another round of weeds after visit two, they should be taken care of on your next visit or during one of our free loyalty visits.
We use a wetting agent in our mixture for visit two that has multiple benefits for your lawn. Wetting agents aid in the uptake of nutrients, crabgrass control, weed control, grub control and also assists with water uptake into the plant. Wetting agents are important especially when water restrictions are a norm in your area. Water from rain or irrigation will be utilized better with this product.
These products should be watered after allowing dry time on the broadleaf weeds. Usually this will take 1-3 hours depending on the temperature and humidity. We recommend .25 to .5 inches of irrigation water across the entire area treated.
Our third visit will continue to feed your lawn as well as protect against grub infestation, which occurs in the late summer/ early fall.
Our insurance visit consists of a liquid nitrogen containing slow release or Stay-N. We add a second crabgrass control, weed knockdown, wetting agent and grub control insurance. We can achieve the proper amount of nitrogen for cool season grass to grow. This will continue to eliminate the chance of crabgrass infestation and knock down the broad leaf weeds. Proper timing of this visit will allow adequate time for grub control to be absorbed by grass plant.
The metamorphic stage of the white grub begins as an adult beetle during July which feeds on various plant material in and around your property. Beetles will feed for a period of 2 weeks before mating. The eggs of the beetle will be laid in the lawn areas of your property. Depending on the environmental conditions, the grub control will be present in the lawn for a period of 60-90 days.
The wetting agent used during this visit will ensure proper uptake of all material used during this visit.
Optimal results are achieved when rainfall or irrigation after application will penetrate carrying the active ingredient into the layer of soil where insects are normally located. We recommend .25 to .5 inches of irrigation water across the entire area treated.
The Smart Edge visit is an essential visit to combat areas that may have been compromised by the edging of your property.
As the edges of your property along roads, driveways, walkways and gardens are manicured they do promote areas for crabgrass to re-infest.
This visit will clean up any breakthrough of crabgrass and weeds in said areas. An assessment of the entire property will also be part of this visit to create a game plan for your properties aeration hot spots.
Visit 5 will boost your lawn with the essential nutrients that are need to wake the plant from the drought stress of the summer. By using a slow release booster during this visit, we can achieve extended feeding during the optimum growing and seeding period of the fall.
If any weeds or crabgrass is still lingering around it will be treated to ensure no propagation will occur during aeration. This visit will diminish the amount crabgrass continuing into the following year.
Visit 6 will be a healthy application of Dolomitic Pelletized Lime. We measure your pH throughout the season so that we can boost your soil for optimum plant growth. The lime treatment will allow the nutrients to be released to benefit seed germination. The air and soil temperatures are optimal during this visit for the germination of seeds and turf recovery from heat and drought stress.
Following our watering instructions after this visit is again an important step to optimal results. Results may vary but this visit will increase the density, improve root health and alleviate soil compaction. Watering instruction will be given to the customer after the aeration and seeding is completed based on the properties.
Visit 7 is your lawns protein/energy shake for the winter period. We put a balanced nitrogen application to continue the food storage process for your lawn. We add potassium to our fertilizer to drive your roots deeper. This visit may be applied at or before winter dormancy which will aid in the growing process come spring time.
